Tragic news from Mannod Quarry in the scenic Crafnant Valley: A climber has passed away despite determined rescue efforts. The pair of climbers were enjoying a day of ‘drytooling’—using axes and crampons on rock—when one climber suddenly felt unwell and collapsed.

In a race against time, the companion ran out of the quarry to find a phone signal, calling emergency services and fetching a defibrillator from the nearby Llyn Crafnant café. CPR was initiated and soon, paramedics and the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team were on the scene, navigating a challenging narrow ledge to reach the climber.

Despite all efforts, the climber could not be revived. The brave team managed to carefully recover the body using a stretcher, lowering it to the quarry bottom and through a flood tunnel to the main track before transferring to police care.

The Ogwen Valley MRT shared, “Our thoughts are with the climber’s family and friends during this difficult time.” This heartbreaking incident is a stark reminder of the dedication and risks involved in rescue operations.
Stay safe out there, adventurers. 💔
