Heartbreaking News: 24-Year-Old’s Brave Battle With Dementia

Andre Yarham, a young man with a vibrant spirit, passed away tragically young just after Christmas, at the age of 24. Initially misdiagnosed with autism, Andre’s real battle was against frontotemporal dementia, diagnosed shortly before his 23rd birthday. His journey shocked many, as his brain was akin to that of a 70-year-old.

His mum, Sam Fairbairn, noticed troubling changes in Andre’s behaviour. With decreased communication and lost interest in his work with Lotus, concerns grew. A visit to a specialist confirmed their fears with an MRI diagnosis of dementia. This cruel disorder rendered Andre mute, and Sam became his full-time carer.

At The Maltings care home in Norfolk, Andre was cherished for his warmth and infectious wit. He became the face of a 2024 Christmas campaign by their parent company, FitzRoy. Sadly, his condition worsened last month, and he was placed under end-of-life care, passing away at a hospice in Norwich on December 27.
In a touching gesture, Andre’s brain has been donated to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for vital research. Sam hopes it will help other families in the future, saying, “If it helps one family, then that would mean the absolute world.”
The Maltings staff remembered Andre’s energy and character warmly. Deputy manager Toby Sutherland shared: “Our dear Andre lost his courageous battle just after Christmas. His wit and adventures will echo here forever.”
Andre’s funeral will take place on January 27 at Breckland Crematorium. A tribute fitting of his love for life, over 100 cars and motorbikes are expected to honour his memory.
Our hearts go out to Sam, Andre’s family, friends, and everyone touched by his vibrant spirit. 🌟❤️ #RememberingAndre #DementiaAwareness
