Heartfelt tributes are pouring in from the rugby world as fans and players alike mourn the sudden loss of Super Rugby star Connor Garden-Bachop. At just 25, the Highlanders wing and Maori All Blacks representative passed away unexpectedly on June 17, 2024, in Fendalton, Christchurch. Shockingly, he was reportedly ‘well and happy’ just hours before his passing.

The recent inquest has clarified the tragic event, revealing his death stemmed from natural causes linked to a mildly dilated heart. The young father of twin girls had no history of seizures, though he did suffer from concussions during his career—an unfortunate yet relatively common aspect of the sport.

Garden-Bachop hailed from a rugby dynasty. His father, Stephen Bachop, played internationally for Samoa and New Zealand, while his mother, Sue Garden-Bachop, was a standout in the women’s national side. His uncle, Graeme Bachop, had the honour of competing in two World Cups for the All Blacks and even represented Japan in 1999. The rugby legacy continues with his brother, Jackson, playing for Moana Pasifika in Super Rugby.
In a touching statement, Jackson expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, saying the family will forever miss Connor. They are determined to honour his memory in their daily lives, inspired by his legacy both on and off the pitch.
Connor’s death reminds us of life’s fragility and the importance of cherishing every moment. His memory will live on through his family, friends, and all those who admired his talents on the rugby field. Let’s keep his loved ones in our thoughts during this difficult time. 💔🏉
