The chapel, dating back to the 1870s, is steeped in history, having replaced an even older chapel from 1770. Listed by Cadw in 1993, it boasts an open-plan hall with a modern kitchen extension. But it’s not just about architectural transformation; this development has also stirred passions in the neighbourhood. With 118 objections raised, concerns over unauthorised work were addressed, ensuring the building retains its character. Some of the iconic pews will stay, and key features like the organ and pulpit will remain intact.
Neighbours have voiced concerns about traffic and parking as the centre evolves, but planning officers clarified that the changes are about adapting the interior while respecting the building’s heritage. There are hopes that keeping it as a place of worship will safeguard its future rather than seeing it converted into something less in keeping with its history. 🏛️
The application narrowly avoided a site visit vote, with councillors eventually backing it 9 to 1. This decision marks a new chapter for the chapel, preserving its legacy while breathing new life into its walls.
