Planning a holiday soon? The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has important guidelines you need to know to avoid any hiccups with your benefits, whether you’re on Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payments (PIP), or other support.

Before jetting off, remember that for longer holidays you might need to inform the DWP. Claimants must still actively job hunt, even when abroad. If you’re waiting on certain claims, international travel might be off the cards.

Be aware: changes in your circumstances must be reported to ensure your Universal Credit payments stay accurate. Failing to do so could lead to overpayments, which you’ll have to repay. And if you’re making a new claim, you must physically be in the UK on the day you submit it.
Universal Credit allows holidays up to one month, but you must stick to your claimant commitment. Keep hitting those job applications, and you may need to return for interviews or new jobs. Report any changes to your situation by calling the Universal Credit helpline at 0800 328 5644.
For those receiving PIP, you must inform the authorities if you’re heading overseas. Key details include when you’re leaving, how long you’ll be gone, your destination, and the reason for travel. Staying outside the UK for more than four weeks could impact your PIP rights. Always update the DWP if there are changes to your condition or needs, as this can affect your benefits.
A temporary absence abroad is generally fine for up to 13 weeks, or 26 weeks if it’s for medical treatment. Remember, not notifying the DWP of changes could lead to prosecution.
Stay informed, enjoy your getaway, and ensure your benefits remain uninterrupted!
