Cardiff University’s class of 2025 witnessed a unique milestone as triplet sisters from Gloucestershire celebrated earning their degrees together, blending shared joy with poignant remembrance. Rose, Maudie, and Grace Orgill, aged 21, each completed challenging degree courses at the Welsh capital’s esteemed university, marking an academic achievement that has underscored their deep familial bond.
While sharing the graduation stage was a proud moment for the Orgill family, the day carried an undertone of sorrow, as it arrived just months after the sudden loss of the sisters’ grandfather on the very day Rose sat her final chemistry exam. In a tender tribute, each sister adorned her graduation gown with a ribbon and a modest forget-me-not flower, symbolising the enduring presence of their grandfather in their lives. Their mother, Clare Orgill, expressed her admiration, illustrating how the girls’ tribute offered a gentle reminder of the support and pride their grandfather felt for them.
The academic journey for the Orgill sisters took an unexpected turn when all three ended up together at Cardiff. Rose, who is the eldest by minutes, recounted that studying at the same university was not their original intention. “We’d actually imagined going our separate ways,” she stated. “But after visiting Cardiff for an open day, we each fell in love with the city—helped, maybe, by rare sunshine which, as we discovered, isn’t always the case.”
Despite their different study paths—Rose securing a BSc in chemistry, Maudie earning a BA in history, and Grace obtaining a BSc in biomedical sciences—the triplets found themselves placed in the same six-person flat during their first year. The unexpected arrangement led to them sharing accommodation through their entire university experience, further entwining their academic and personal lives.
Grace, reflecting on their close-knit living situation, remarked with a smile that their bedrooms at university were even nearer to each other than at their family home, turning their student residence into a true “home from home.” If anything, the arrangement helped expand their social circles, as she pointed out, “It allowed us to make triple the friends, which isn’t something you’d want to complain about.”
University life wasn’t limited to academics for the Orgills. Pursuing extracurricular activities with equal verve, all three sisters joined the Cardiff University Netball Club. Rose competed at the highest varsity level, while Maudie led as team captain in her final year—emphasising their teamwork both on and off the court.
With graduation behind them, the sisters are now setting their sights on adventure, planning a shared journey to south-east Asia. This trip comes as a brief interlude whilst the trio contemplates their future paths—a period that may see the sisters take different directions for the first time since birth. Grace is considering a career with the RAF, Rose has her eye on opportunities abroad, and Maudie might return to Cardiff University for a law conversion course—an indicator the Welsh capital may still be part of the Orgill story.
Their father, Phil Orgill, shared his excitement about the potential routes his daughters may take, saying, “We’re looking forward to finding out whether they’ll ever end up living in the same city again. For now, we can’t wait to hear about all their adventures once they set off travelling.”
