### Community Unites to Honour the Memory of Two Much-Loved Teenagers

A deep sense of loss has given way to a powerful celebration of life in Port Talbot, as the community surrounding St Joseph’s Comprehensive School has rallied to pay tribute to two cherished young students, David Ejimofor and Preston Camps. The unveiling of a heartfelt mural within the school’s gym constitutes a lasting memorial, instilling hope and resilience among those still mourning the tragic loss of these promising 15-year-olds.

David Ejimofor’s life was abruptly halted in June 2023 following a swimming accident at Aberavon Beach. Mere months later, at Christmas, the school learned of another tragedy: the passing of Preston Camps in a motorcycle accident. Both boys had been highly regarded by staff and pupils alike, their kindness and positivity leaving an indelible mark within the school community.
Determined not to let their memory fade, teachers and pupils at St Joseph’s embarked on an ambitious project to remember the boys in a manner befitting their vibrant spirits. The gym, a place closely linked to both boys due to their shared enthusiasm for sport, was chosen as the venue for the tribute. The space, now renamed in their honour, features a striking mural designed to encapsulate their personalities and inspire future generations.
The journey to this tribute was a community effort. Fundraising initiatives flourished, with activities such as ‘Fitness for a Cause’ rallying classmates, staff, and friends. These efforts raised thousands of pounds, paving the way for the mural. Families of both boys were deeply involved in selecting the photographs to be immortalised on the gym wall, ensuring the artwork resonated personally.
On 18 July, an emotional gathering was held in the newly-dedicated gym. Family members, students, and staff assembled to witness the unveiling. The mural vividly portrays David and Preston in the prime of youth, accompanied by the motivational words: “Believe in yourself and you will be unstoppable.” Preston’s section features a nod to his time as goalkeeper at Afan Lido Football Club, while David is depicted as the strong, quietly determined athlete he was remembered to be.
The impact upon their families was profound. Preston’s relatives, moved to tears, spoke of how accurately the mural captured his essence—and were especially touched to see the inclusion of his football club’s badge. Kay, Preston’s grandmother, remarked how meaningful it was to have such a permanent tribute within the school, while his sister Sheffield emphasised the emotional weight of seeing her brother remembered so vividly. For many, the gym now symbolises both the loss and the ongoing inspiration Preston brings to those he left behind.
David’s father, Alex, expressed deep appreciation for the school’s efforts and the thoughtfulness of the memorial. Noting how much the gym would have meant to his son—a dedicated athlete known for his strength and quiet confidence—he said he hoped other pupils would find inspiration in the space, carrying forward David’s ethos of resilience and determination.
Teachers at the school, many of whom taught both boys, recounted their individual strengths and the unique void each has left. Matthew McCarthy, head of health and wellbeing, described David’s formidable athletic presence, noting how his respectful and humble nature made him memorable to all. Others spoke of Preston’s outgoing personality and his bright future, having already begun to carve a path in both academics and work.
The mural itself was created by Thew Crew, a graffiti artist duo consisting of Matthew Cole and Ryan Davies. Despite the challenges and weight of responsibility, the artists produced a work that has quickly become cherished by the school community. Students, some of whom never knew David or Preston personally, report feeling motivated every time they look at the tribute—a testament to the far-reaching impact both boys have had.
In sum, what began as a response to tragedy has evolved into a profound demonstration of unity, remembrance, and perseverance. The mural now stands as a source of strength and inspiration, ensuring the positive influence of David and Preston endures—both within the gym’s walls and across the wider school community. It is hoped their story will continue to motivate not just those who knew them, but everyone seeking to overcome adversity with courage and hope.
