Ministers are working on developing tools to disrupt the ways abusers make money, such as live streaming and selling access to unlawful content. A big part of this is using AI to identify these disturbing images, reducing exposure for law enforcement officers by allowing the Child Abuse Image Database to categorise the content instead.

Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips emphasised the urgent need to stop this exploitation, stating: “Child sexual abuse is a horrific abuse of power causing devastating harm. The chance to profit from this suffering fuels these crimes.”

Earlier this year, the Internet Watch Foundation reported a shocking 400% increase in AI-generated child abuse content, highlighting the urgent need for action.

This move follows a recent agreement between the Five Eyes nations focused on closer cooperation to tackle issues like irregular migration. It’s now up to tech companies and the financial sector to join the fight in detecting and disrupting these abuses.
