Ever thought about getting a tattoo that’s both fun and functional? Matt Woodger from Derby has done just that! After 12 years in retail, Matt got fed up with the pesky foil-wrapped Cadbury Creme Eggs that never seemed to scan properly at the checkout. So, he took a bold step – he had the barcode tattooed on his arm!

Matt first joked about the tattoo over 25 years ago, but finally got inked at Studio One Tattoo on 21st January. He was thrilled to discover it actually worked when he tested it at a Sainsbury’s self-checkout! Watching the barcode in action had both him and the staff in stitches.

Matt’s cheeky tattoo has turned into a viral sensation, racking up over 4.8 million views on TikTok. Many have hailed it as ‘genius’, with one user commenting, “It was the first barcode I memorised while working in Woolworths!”
Why a Creme Egg barcode you ask? If you’ve ever worked retail, you know the struggle – remembering tricky barcodes was often easier than dealing with stubborn scanners. For Matt, the tattoo is not just a reminder of his retail days but a fun way to make people smile.
His partner Claire captured the amusing moment, proving sometimes a bit of silliness is exactly what the world needs. And don’t worry, Matt’s got a great sense of humour about the whole thing. He chuckled, “I’m older and wiser now, but maybe not wiser!”
