🏟️ Did you know Neath Abbey was almost home to the “Wembley of Wales”? In the 1950s, ambitious plans were drawn up for a massive sports stadium right next to the historical ruins but took an unexpected turn!

‘Neath Monks’ speedway team and grand sporting events were envisioned at this unique site. Though the grand vision didn’t fully materialise, the area wasn’t short of action. In 1955, Friday night floodlit stock car racing took over, attracting huge crowds and even a young Bernie Ecclestone!
Stock car racing sparked excitement and controversy, with thrilling races described as the “most vicious motoring sport ever devised.” Though it was fiercely competitive, safety was apparently better than regular driving – go figure!

The speedway scene got another lease of life in 1962 with the Welsh Dragons, who nearly stormed to victory in their league. However, luck wasn’t on their side as poor weather and modest crowds proved too much.

By 1968, the stadium had given way to an industrial park, bringing to a close a short but thrilling chapter in Welsh sporting history. Today, that land echoes with the clatter of industry rather than engine roars.
