The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced that over 3.7 million people in Great Britain are now receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP), an essential benefit for individuals with long-term health conditions or disabilities. Did you know that the length of a PIP award can vary dramatically? While some might last just nine months, others can be ongoing, reviewed only every 10 years! So, who stands a better chance of snagging these long-term awards?

Recent data sheds light on six health conditions likely to receive the longest PIP awards, which can last five years or more. Topping the list are those with visual diseases, with more than 65% getting longer awards. Musculoskeletal conditions like arthritis and joint pain aren’t far behind, with over 50% receiving extended support. Neurological conditions, including epilepsy and multiple sclerosis, also feature prominently, with approximately 49.5% of claimants awarded longer-term PIP.

Awards are based on how much a condition affects daily life and independent living. The DWP conducts regular reviews for most claimants to ensure they continue to receive the necessary support. However, some claimants with stable or progressively worsening conditions may have ‘light touch’ reviews every decade instead.

PIP payments range between £29.20 to £187.45 per week, depending on one’s eligibility for both daily living and mobility components. Applying for PIP involves demonstrating challenges in everyday tasks, such as preparing food, managing medications, or getting around.
