A terrifying ordeal unfolded for a couple out for a walk in Kenfig Hill, Bridgend, when they were randomly attacked by Matthew Williams, 34. On that fateful night in May, Williams targeted the unsuspecting pair, trying to engage them in conversation in a bizarre manner. He offered to pay them if they would cause damage to a car, and as they tried to distance themselves, he aggressively pursued them, putting the man in a headlock and striking the woman who attempted to intervene.
Williams’ violent spree continued when his then-partner tried to calm him down. Despite her efforts, he assaulted her before authorities were able to intervene. At the hospital, Williams was abusive, hurling racial insults at officers and physically attacking them. Court proceedings later revealed that Williams was already on bail for other offenses in north Wales.
At Caernarfon Crown Court, Williams’ violent exploits were detailed, including a chilling account of previous attacks on a former partner in Penrhyndeudraeth. This included assaulting her after an argument, putting her in a headlock, and leaving her injured.
Despite the chaos he caused, Williams received a suspended 19-month sentence, conditional upon his participation in rehabilitation. The judge handed out a suspended sentence for the assaults on the couple and his then-partner, adding a three-year restraining order to protect one of his victims. His acts of racial harassment earned him an additional suspended sentence.
The court heard of his troubled past and struggles with mental health, although this does little to excuse his string of offences. As part of his sentencing, Williams is required to address his behaviour and substance abuse problems or face immediate imprisonment.
