🎉🌊 Dive into the vibrant world of Butetown Carnival, the highlight of Cardiff’s cultural calendar! Hundreds flocked to Cardiff Bay on Sunday for a spectacular display of noise, colour, and chaos. Led by a giant mermaid, this year’s parade embraced a maritime theme, celebrating the rich shipping history of Butetown, once known as Tiger Bay. 🚢🌈
With attendees donning feather boas and dazzling costumes, the parade danced its way from Bute Street to the Senedd, filling the streets with Indian and Caribbean performances. Organiser Keith Murrell highlighted the carnival’s power to unite: “It’s about togetherness, celebration, and joy across communities.”
Feel the beat with Dragon Dholis, who energised the crowd with upbeat Punjabi drumming. “We bring vibrant music to Cardiff Bay,” said Karl Singh from the band. It’s events like these that showcase the multicultural spirit of Butetown.
Pedal Power also made a fabulous appearance, decorating handbikes with rainbow feathers, adding their unique flair to the celebration. Niki Fogaty, of Pedal Power, shared: “Carnival’s chaos and colours are fantastic! It’s a day for everyone to be part of something wonderful.”
Locals like Jameel Abdullah watched with pride, emphasising the inclusive nature of his community: “There’s no division here; everyone’s equal. We’re proud of our diversity and unity.”
