Shocking news: Gavin Powell, a 39-year-old from Glynneath, has been sentenced to 28 months in prison for a brutal assault on his partner. After getting angry over her speaking to a former boyfriend, Powell viciously attacked her, leaving her needing hospital treatment. The shocking incident involved punching, kicking, and even biting, leaving the victim feeling like her life was “not worth living”.

Despite holding a responsible position on the HS2 high-speed rail project, Powell’s violent actions have landed him behind bars. This wasn’t a one-time outburst; the pattern of aggression had been ongoing, with the relationship deteriorating over time. The most recent assault took place on New Year’s Day when a drunken Powell turned up at her home, leading to a horrific series of violent acts.

Swansea Crown Court heard how the victim ended up in Morriston Hospital’s emergency department due to the severity of her injuries. Powell, who has multiple prior convictions, tried to deny the attacks initially before finally pleading guilty to battery and assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH) on the first day of his trial.
The judge condemned the attacks as “prolonged and persistent,” and Powell received a five-year restraining order alongside his prison sentence.
