The club’s been suspended and certain players banned after claims of shocking behaviour during initiations, like eating raw onions and excessive drinking. 😱
Students are split on the issue. Some, like Kay, have heard wild stories and worry about safeguarding measures, especially in sports clubs. “Some societies are alright, but I’ve definitely heard some crazy stories,” Kay admits.
But not everyone shares the same concern. Polly, a society leader, thinks there’s been progress with stricter guidance for committee members. “We’ve received a massive increase in warnings about what we can and can’t do,” Polly points out.
Others feel the Students’ Union acts quickly to address problems. “They correct issues swiftly and ensure compliance with rules,” one student said. The netball community also acknowledges positive changes over time, noting it’s safer now than before.
Still, some believe the ‘banter’ is part of sports society culture. Anwar said, “It is what it is,” suggesting some behaviours are ingrained.
While many appreciate efforts made to tackle the issue, there’s a call for further improvements to ensure student safety. “There’s always more to be done,” stated another student.
