🚨 Big Changes in Policing on the Horizon! 🚨

The Home Office has released new plans to shake up policing across England and Wales, but don’t expect Cardiff Bay to get a stronger say in Welsh policing anytime soon. Lord Hanson of Flint made it clear that “devolution is not on the agenda” in these reforms.

Though Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own powers over policing, Wales remains tied to Westminster. The Silk Commission suggested this should change over a decade ago, recommending that Wales gain control over policing and crime prevention. Former Plaid Cymru leader, Lord Wigley, pushed for recognising these past recommendations, highlighting the support from Welsh leadership.
Despite the push, Lord Hanson, a former MP for Wales, emphasised efficiency and local management as the focus, snubbing further devolution. Discussions with the Welsh Government concerning the proposed reorganisation will take place soon, with eyes on working closely after the upcoming Senedd elections.
Keep an eye out! The new plan includes unveiling a National Police Service to set benchmarks in tech and training and address broader issues like counter-terrorism and county-line crimes. Expect to see a reduction in the current number of police forces, too, with larger units managing local concerns.
What do you think about these changes? Should Wales gain more control, or is the new focus on efficiency the way forward? Let’s discuss! 🔍🏴
