After serving the community for decades from its base just off the A40, B&Q has officially announced plans to relocate its Carmarthen store. The household name in DIY and home improvement will move operations just one mile down the road, settling into new premises at Parc Pensarn to the south of the town centre, with the opening scheduled for February 2026.

The announcement marks a significant chapter for B&Q in Carmarthen, a town where it has long been a staple for home renovators, gardeners, and DIY enthusiasts alike. Originally founded in Southampton in 1969 by Richard Block and David Quayle, the brand has established a strong presence across South Wales, becoming one of the nation’s most recognisable retail chains. Its Carmarthen branch has not only become a familiar landmark but also a key resource for the region’s residents.

A spokesperson for B&Q revealed that the relocation comes ahead of the expiration of their current lease in April 2026. While the company does not own the current building, it has moved quickly to secure its future presence in the locality, ensuring that loyal customers have uninterrupted access to its products and expertise. As yet, the fate of the current site remains undetermined, with speculation continuing about what may replace the much-frequented store.

The upcoming outlet at Parc Pensarn is set to embrace a number of new features aimed at enhancing the customer experience. Plans include an expanded click-and-collect service, a dedicated paint-mixing desk, and a modernised garden centre. The retailer has not confirmed the exact unit it will occupy within the park, but suggested the new store would be more compact than its current counterpart. However, there is a promise of an improved product range and service offering, taking full advantage of the reconfigured and rebranded retail space available.

Parc Pensarn itself has grown into a thriving commercial and industrial centre. Already home to well-known brands such as Halfords, Euro Car Parts, and Poundstretcher, the site draws shoppers from across the region. Business activity also extends to offices let by Welsh Water and accountancy practices, with new facilities, including a gym and café, opening in recent years. B&Q’s arrival will add a further dimension to the park’s dynamic mix of retail and services.

Significantly, B&Q has confirmed that all of its current Carmarthen staff will transfer to the new location, providing some reassurance for employees amid the changes. The company has indicated that the existing store will close its doors only the day before the new site opens, ensuring no gap in service for customers.

Justin Willis, central divisional director at B&Q, commented on the move: “We are looking forward to moving to a new location in Carmarthen Parc Pensarn in February next year. The move reflects our ongoing commitment to growth, allowing us to continue to offer our range of products and service to our customers in the area, in addition to a more convenient experience, being in a prime retail location.”

Mr Willis also highlighted the new and improved features customers can expect, including facilities for trade clients. “We’re pleased that the store will be introducing some brilliant additions such as an expanded click and collect service, an improved garden centre, a timber cutter, and a dedicated paint-mixing desk. There will also be an enhanced offer for TradePoint customers through a dedicated kiosk,” he added.

As anticipation grows for the unveiling of the new B&Q store early next year, the development underlines how major retailers are adapting—and investing—to continue meeting the needs of modern shoppers. The move, while motivated by the practicalities of a lease change, is being framed by B&Q as an opportunity to refresh and improve the retail experience in Carmarthen.

While uncertainty lingers over the future of the outgoing site, B&Q’s continued presence in the region appears assured, promising both innovation and familiarity for the town’s loyal customers.
