🚨 Mix-Up at Tesco: Welsh Signs Confuse Shoppers in Cornwall! 🚨
Shoppers in Helston, Cornwall, were baffled when they found Welsh language signs in their local Tesco, intending to showcase the Cornish language. Oops! 🤦♂️
Instead of celebrating Cornish culture, signs read ‘bwyd môr’ for seafood instead of the Cornish ‘boos mor’, and ‘tatws melys’ for sweet potatoes instead of ‘aval dor melys’. Meat signs showed ‘cig a dofednod’ not the Cornish ‘kig and yar’, and sausages were labelled ‘selsig’ instead of ‘selsigen’.
Dr Garry Tregidga from the University of Exeter called it a blunder, but praised their intention to use Cornish, hoping for a speedy correction. 🛍️
Cornish, or Kernewek, shares history with Welsh and Breton and is recognized alongside Welsh and Scottish Gaelic by the UK Government. Councillor Loveday Jenkin highlighted how bilingual signs can help normalise the language. 🇬🇧
