Tragedy struck in Lisbon last Wednesday when the iconic Gloria funicular derailed, leading to the loss of 16 lives. Among those who died was 82-year-old Andrew David Kenneth Young from Holyhead, Wales. Andrew, who was a passionate traveller, spent his retirement visiting heritage railways and tramways worldwide. His family finds solace knowing he was indulging in what he loved most during his final moments.

Andrew’s remarkable journey began in Auchterarder, Perthshire, before he settled in Holyhead in 1980 for a fulfilling career as a customs officer. His family remembers him with fondness, celebrating a life well-lived and a love for transport that took him across the globe.

Also among the British victims were Kayleigh Smith, 36, and Will Nelson, 44, who were cherished members of their community. The tragedy has impacted families far and wide, with victims also hailing from countries like Portugal, South Korea, Switzerland, Canada, Ukraine, France, and the US.
Initial reports from Portuguese authorities suggest a potential cable issue as the cause of the crash. Our hearts go out to all the families affected by this devastating event. May we remember Andrew, Kayleigh, Will, and all other victims with warmth and gratitude for the joy they brought into the world.
