For over two decades, The Cinnamon Tree has cemented its reputation as a beloved family restaurant in south Wales. However, in recent months, many regular patrons have found themselves scratching their heads, uncertain as to whether the long-standing eatery was still in operation. Contrary to rumours regarding its closure, the establishment continues to welcome diners – just in a different location.

The confusion traces back to last year, when the family behind The Cinnamon Tree, who launched the original site in Treforest in 1999, announced their intention to shutter due to an ongoing dispute over the lease. Though this announcement sparked concern among loyal customers, the situation took an unexpected turn. The lease issue was soon resolved, allowing the restaurant to reopen its doors to the delight of its local community.

Yet, the celebrations were somewhat brief. Not long after resuming business in Treforest, a new opportunity arose: the owners identified an ideal venue in Trallwn, Pontypridd, and made the decision to relocate. In August 2024, they shifted operations and rebranded as Cinnamon Pontypridd. This move, while only a few miles away, proved disorienting for both staff and patrons.

Ray Uzzaman, a member of the family team, has spoken openly about the confusion. “Many people believed we’d shut for good, but we’ve actually been trading all along – just at a new address,” he explained. The temporary closure, rapid reopening, and swift relocation led to uncertainty within the community, with some regulars left in the dark about their favourite restaurant’s whereabouts.

Now situated on Ralph Street, attached to the Central Hotel on the former site of Dotty’s Place, The Cinnamon Tree continues the traditions that made it a local mainstay. “We looked at the new place, liked its size and layout, and decided it would be a good fit,” said Ray. The restaurant’s popular all-you-can-eat buffet remains a weekend highlight, and they continue to offer a wide menu of takeaways and deliveries. Recent additions, such as a street food menu, have been introduced to keep long-term customers excited and attract new faces.

The move to Pontypridd has provided practical benefits, according to Ray. The new location is actually more convenient for many previous customers, removing the need for them to travel to Treforest. “We believe this spot offers us a larger catchment area for both diners and delivery orders,” Ray said, enthusiastically. Even so, he recognises that a significant segment of their customer base may still be unaware of the transition, impacting sales in recent months.

Despite this, the response from those who have rediscovered the restaurant has been overwhelmingly positive. “Regulars are often thrilled to learn we’re still open,” Ray added. “Some people now find us even closer to home, while others are gracious enough to make the extra effort to visit.”

In addition to their new Pontypridd site, the family continues to operate other branches: the original Cinnamon Tree in Pontcanna, Cardiff, and a buffet-focused sister restaurant in Broadlands, Bridgend. Each location maintains its commitment to quality and friendly service, hallmarks that have ensured a loyal following across south Wales.

As the owners look to the future, their main hope is for former and new customers alike to recognise that Cinnamon Tree remains very much alive and thriving – just in a new place. As Ray neatly concluded, “We’re here, the food’s as good as ever, and everyone’s welcome.”
