**New Women-Only Gym in Carmarthen Draws Crowds by Focusing on Inclusive and Safe Space**
A new gym in Carmarthen is quickly gaining popularity, but not for the typical reasons associated with fitness centres. The standout feature of KC Leisure, located in the heart of Parc Pensarn, is its women-only policy — a distinctive approach that has sparked significant interest within the local community and beyond.
KC Leisure, branded as a “holistic sanctuary” rather than just a traditional gym, has embraced the idea of creating a supportive enclave tailored for women of all ages and abilities. Owner Paul Lloyd explained that the motivation came from recognising a local gap. He observed, “My daughter was searching for a gym experience that felt comfortable and inclusive for women, but options in southwest Wales were limited.” This vision ultimately laid the foundation for a fitness centre committed to being welcoming for those who might feel apprehensive about mainstream gyms.
The facility itself is state-of-the-art, nestled in a newly constructed, two-storey building, offering ample parking. Inside, visitors find an array of fitness options: a spacious main gym for strength training, a studio for group activities, and the ‘Fire and Ice Retreat’ — a dedicated area featuring sauna and cold bath therapy. Downstairs houses a spin studio, hot yoga and Pilates rooms, and even a crèche designed to allow parents to work out while their children are supervised.
KC Leisure goes a step further with its schedule of classes, catering to diverse interests and goals, such as core strengthening, boot camps, and “warrior” fitness sessions. This wide range provides opportunities for beginners as well as seasoned athletes, ensuring accessibility for all members. Notably, some members have accessed a gym environment for the first time in their lives. “Two of our members, both in their late seventies, told us they would never have considered joining a gym if it weren’t for the safe, women-only aspect,” Lloyd remarked.
For many, the formation of a close-knit community is as important as the physical facilities. Tyla Lloyd, Paul’s daughter, shared her perspective, saying she used to travel 20 miles to Llanelli just to take part in women-only fitness classes. She now finds herself returning to KC Leisure regularly, not just for the workouts, but also for the camaraderie. “It feels easier to strike up conversations here, and women support each other in ways I hadn’t experienced before,” she commented. This sense of belonging, members say, is a key factor in the gym’s early success.
While the upper floor remains reserved solely for female guests, KC Leisure has also developed a welcoming space on the ground floor in the form of Grounded, its coffee shop open to all. Both men and women are welcome to enjoy its selection of hot drinks, snacks, and meals. The menu, curated by local chef Ben James from Shikaku restaurant, ranges from hearty breakfast burritos and pancakes to lighter salads, mezze plates, and protein shakes — striking a balance between indulgence and nourishment.
Paul Lloyd says he deliberately designed the coffee shop to be a separate destination: “People might come for a gym session and stay for a bite to eat, but we also encourage non-gym visitors to pop in. It helps foster a sense of greater community around the gym and contribute to the friendly atmosphere we’re building here.”
The feedback since opening just before the festive season has been overwhelmingly positive. Many patrons say the atmosphere feels “zen” and relaxing, a marked departure from the typical gym setting that can often be intimidating. KC Leisure’s ethos — focusing as much on mental wellbeing as physical health — appears to resonate widely.
Looking ahead, Paul Lloyd is hopeful that the unique blend of services will establish the gym and its attached coffee shop as permanent fixtures in Carmarthen. “My greatest hope is to keep growing this supportive community,” he said. “Health is about mind and body; we want everyone to feel at home and encouraged here.”
KC Leisure offers classes, flexible memberships, and is open early until late throughout the week, with full details available on their website. Grounded coffee shop welcomes all during their operating hours, cementing the centre’s reputation as a hub for wellness, nutrition, and connection in Carmarthen.
