Wrexham’s James McClean has given a no-nonsense response to whispers about a possible return to the Republic of Ireland squad. Ireland’s manager, Heimir Hallgrimsson, had McClean on his radar due to a shortage at left-back, but ultimately opted for Kevin O’Toole instead. McClean, who hung up his international boots back in 2023, made it crystal clear on Instagram that he’s totally committed to his retirement. “There is no need to talk about me because I ain’t available for selection as I am RETIRED,” he stated.

McClean has been an outspoken figure, recently slating Ireland’s Finn Azaz for “embarrassing” theatrics in a match against Armenia. The Wrexham player’s frankness doesn’t stop on the pitch either. Despite being part of the club’s rise through the leagues under the Hollywood ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, his game time has dwindled with boss Phil Parkinson favouring Liberato Cacace.

Feeling a bit disenchanted with the beautiful game, McClean is eyeing up a boxing career. In a chat with Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, he revealed he’s seriously considering trading his football boots for boxing gloves. “I have a bigger passion now for boxing than I do for football,” he admitted, after finding solace in boxing training to manage his frustration. He’s even held some initial talks about making this bold career leap.

This news follows an incident where McClean claims self-defence after a heated confrontation with a Cardiff fan before a match. North Wales Police have noted they haven’t got any reports of this dust-up.
With a possible boxing future and a colourful past, McClean continues to be a fascinating figure both on and off the field. ⚽🥊
