Vicki Williams, a 49-year-old mum, learned the hard way what can happen when dental anxiety takes over. To hide her discoloured teeth, she spent £500 on temporary veneers for that perfect ‘Hollywood smile.’ But beneath those shiny veneers, her real teeth were struggling. 😬
Earlier this year, Vicki felt a nagging pain in her lower wisdom teeth but, afraid of the dentist due to a lifelong phobia, she relied on ibuprofen instead. By the time she finally sought help, an infection was wreaking havoc in her mouth. 😧
Just days later, Vicki was rushed to Lancaster Royal Infirmary because the swelling in her mouth and throat made it hard to breathe. She endured three surgeries, including a five-day induced coma, to fight the potentially deadly infection known as Ludwig’s Angina. 🏥
After a month in the hospital, Vicki was discharged and now stresses the importance of overcoming fear and addressing dental issues. Her message is clear: never ignore a toothache, and don’t let fear keep you from getting help. 🦷
Thanks to support from the Dental Education Centre, she’s on the path to dental recovery and raising awareness about the dangers of neglecting dental health. She says, “It seems silly now, but my fear almost killed me. Dental visits might be uncomfortable, but they’re nowhere near what I’ve gone through.”
