Caerphilly Reform Candidate Responds Dynamically to Unexpected Election Outcome

In the recent Caerphilly by-election, Reform UK’s candidate, Llyr Powell, had a mixed night. Despite a strong campaign, Reform UK finished second behind Plaid Cymru’s Lindsay Whittle, who secured 15,961 votes to Reform’s count, trailing by approximately 3,000. Labour, previously holding the seat for years, came third with just 3,713 votes, showing a big shift in voter preference.

Reform UK had high hopes, especially with big names like Nigel Farage making campaign visits and significant resources invested in the push. The turnout was notably high at 50.3%, marking the highest participation in this constituency for a Senedd or Welsh Assembly election.

While the result wasn’t what Powell had hoped for, he remains optimistic about the future. Speaking after the result, Powell said, “We’re going to analyse what’s happened and move forward with more manifestos and candidates. The gains we made are significant, and we’re building a movement here.”

Powell highlighted the party’s success in cutting into Labour’s vote significantly, winning several council wards across the constituency. “We came close, we decimated the Labour vote, and we increased our vote share massively,” he added.

Reflecting on whether a Welsh leader is needed for the party, Powell felt more time was the key to register voters and increase turnout. The evening was rounded off with a positive outlook, looking forward to more success at upcoming elections, with an emphasis on momentum and trained activists making headway for a stronger Reform representation in the future.
