A Welsh business scandal has come to light! Solo Services, a cleaning company in Llansamlet, was caught pocketing a whopping £66,642.92 by underpaying 430 employees. And they weren’t alone! Eight other businesses in Wales were also found to be short-changing their staff and have been publicly named by the UK Government.

Here’s the lowdown on these companies: KK Fine Foods in Deeside didn’t pay £19,949.59 to 257 workers. Bridgetime Transport in Cwmbran shorted four employees by £12,272.64. Tir Prince Raceway in Abergele failed to pay a staff member £18,400.70. CLIC Limited in Cwmbran underpaid two workers by £5,397.75. CDT Sidoli in Welshpool owed £3,561.16 to 276 people. Janath (UK) in Cardigan owed one worker £4,486.25. DF99 Limited in Cardiff didn’t pay £6,868.53 to 15 employees. Finally, Eleri W Evans in Caernarfon withheld £3,923.70 from one worker.

The UK’s minimum wage ensures fair compensation: £12.21/hour for over 21s, £10/hour for ages 18-20, and £7.55 for under 18s and apprentices. Business Secretary Peter Kyle insists that every worker deserves their rightful pay, and the government will crack down on those who don’t play by the rules.
Baroness Philippa Stroud of the Low Pay Commission supports publicising these wrongdoings, saying businesses need to learn the consequences of underpayment, and workers should know their rights. TUC’s Paul Nowak emphasises the importance of companies playing fair, as withheld wages hurt not just workers but also local economies.
