In a heart-wrenching case from Hackney, 86-year-old John Burke has tragically died just a day after a violent burglary at his home. The heartbreaking events unfolded when John, a cherished member of his community on Fountayne Road, was assaulted during a break-in on Monday, September 29. Despite being discharged from the hospital, he sadly passed away the next day.

The community, reeling from the loss of a “much-loved” neighbour, has seen swift action from local authorities. A murder investigation kicked into gear on October 22 after new medical evidence came to light. Year-old Ashley Malcolm from Reighton Road now faces a murder charge in connection with John’s death. Already charged with robbery, Malcolm is also linked to other alleged burglaries and an attempted break-in in Hackney around the same period.
Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke expressed deep sympathies, stating, “John was a much-loved neighbour and our thoughts are with his family and friends.” She also thanked the public for their continued support during the investigation, acknowledging the community’s concern and the dedicated efforts of the officers involved.

John’s story reminds us of the importance of looking out for one another, especially our elderly neighbours. As we await the court proceedings scheduled for November 11 at Thames Magistrates’ Court, let’s extend our thoughts and condolences to John’s family. Truly, he will be missed by all who knew him.
