During a short inquiry, community representatives and officials shared that a whopping 38 million tonnes of waste is dumped illegally each year – that’s enough to fill Wembley Stadium 35 times! Organised crime groups involved in other serious crimes like drugs and money laundering are behind this.
Despite promises for a cleaner Britain and strategies to address waste crime, urgent reforms are needed. Recommendations include setting up a joint unit for better local collaboration, reviewing financial rules to fund crime enforcement, and ensuring landfill tax changes don’t lead to more illegal dump sites.
Baroness Sheehan, chairwoman of the committee, urges immediate action to fix these multiple failings and start an independent review. 🤝
