π Meet Roman Freeman, a remarkable 15-year-old from Cardiff who is battling a former addiction to energy drinks with incredible resilience. His journey began at just 12, when his family noticed his behaviour changing due to an overwhelming dependency on those sugary highs.

πͺ With intervention from his GP and unwavering support from Barnardo’s, Roman is now proudly down to just one energy drink a month. “I’m weaning myself off,” Roman shares, emphasising the positive impact mental health support has had on his life.
π Roman is part of Barnardo’s programmes that have helped him grow socially and develop new skills. He loves the weekly cooking sessions where he learns to make healthy meals, a skill he says has boosted his mental health by instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment. Plus, itβs a fantastic way to bring the community together! π₯

π¬ Roman and many young people in Wales face significant challenges with mental health and food access. In fact, a study shows that nearly 46% of young people in Wales are facing mental health issues, with food provision being a top concern. Thanks to initiatives like Tasty Tuesdays, young people have a safe space to enjoy a meal and learn essential life skills.
π Roman now envisions a brighter future, aspiring to become a youth worker. He’s already volunteering and feeling positive about things he never expected. His story is a beacon of hope and a reminder that with the right support, anything is possible.
π If you’re facing similar struggles or want to lend a helping hand, remember there’s a community ready to support you. Initiatives like those from Barnardo’s and Co-op are making a real difference.
Stay strong, Roman! πͺβ¨
