Every time there’s a closure between junctions 37 and 38, which has happened multiple times recently, traffic gets funneled through Pyle along the A48. With major roadworks already causing delays, it’s a recipe for gridlock. Just ask locals who were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic or forced to work from home during the worst of it.
September was particularly brutal with high winds and an unfortunate lorry crash leading to several hours of shutdown. Add roadworks at Pyle Cross into the mix, and you’ve got a perfect storm that has businesses feeling the squeeze and residents calling it a “disaster waiting to happen.”
Councillor Rhys Watkins summed it up, saying the disruptions have put businesses under pressure, blocked emergency access, and made it hazardous for families crossing the road. One local described trying to navigate out of this chaos as an “absolute nightmare.”
The ongoing M4 roadworks, running until November, made the traffic situation worse, with some blaming local councils. However, Bridgend Council clarified they weren’t involved with the roadworks, which were essential upgrades by Wales & West Utilities.
Despite this, locals are fed up with the sustained disruption. Many are pleading for better planning and coordination to avoid further chaos. Residents, like Jan and Lorraine, shared how they’ve lost work shifts or faced nerve-wracking drives due to blocked junctions and noisy, confusing temporary lights.
