In a shocking case at Swansea Crown Court, Alexander Shannon was sentenced to 27 months in prison for a series of disturbing assaults on his partner. From pulling her hair out over minor disagreements to ruthless physical attacks, his campaign of fear reached its peak when he choked her on Valentine’s Day, leaving her struggling to breathe.

Shannon’s abusive relationship, which began in 2022, was marked by controlling and coercive behaviour. The court heard harrowing details of his tyrannical actions, including assaulting his partner over ‘wrong’ food orders and making too much noise while making coffee. It was only after a third violent outburst that police were finally alerted and Shannon, 37, was brought to justice.

Despite his past filled with similar offences against women, Shannon hopes to undertake cognitive behavioural therapy. However, the judge was sceptical, criticising Shannon’s pattern of breaching court orders and describing him as a “spiteful, cruel” man who women should be wary of.
As he begins his sentence, Shannon’s victim shared her ordeal, describing the long-lasting mental scars and the terrifying experience of being strangled. She now hopes to regain her sense of safety and peace.
