Remembering Alan Bridgeman Phillips: a Cardiff resident whose life and career may have been tragically cut short by asbestos exposure. After a life spent in the Merchant Navy and the steelworks plant in Cardiff, Alan was diagnosed with epithelioid mesothelioma, a type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure, at 91.
His health took a downturn in late October after being admitted to the University Hospital of Wales with complications that sadly led to his passing on October 28. During an inquest at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court earlier this week, it was noted that Alan’s illnesses could be linked to industrial exposure, echoing a reality faced by many who have worked in similar environments.
Assistant Coroner Andrew Morse expressed condolences to Alan’s family, acknowledging the potential link between his work conditions and his health issues. It’s a reminder of the occupational hazards that have historically affected many who worked in heavy industries.
