The police are gearing up for a potential 6% rise in crime due to new government plans aiming to ease prison overcrowding. The proposed Sentencing Bill could mean fewer short prison sentences and more offenders released early, putting more people back on the streets sooner rather than later.
With police forces already stretched, this anticipated increase could mean around 396,000 additional crimes next year. It’s expected to cost a whopping £300-£400 million, but these expenses remain “unfunded” as of now, sparking major concern among police chiefs.
Assistant Chief Constable Jason Devonport, previously a prison governor, expects all types of offences to rise. The probation service is ramping up efforts to recruit 1,500 new officers annually over the next three years, hoping to keep pace with the demands of the sentencing changes.
Mr Devonport believes in the Sentencing Bill’s focus on rehabilitation but stresses the importance of proper funding to handle the transition smoothly. Police chiefs agree, noting that short sentences often do little to prevent reoffending, which stands at 50% for terms under 12 months. Short sentences may not be the answer, but ensuring police and probation have the right resources to manage this shift is critical for community safety.
In response, the Government plans to build 14,000 more prison places and boost the probation budget by £700 million over the next three years, promising strict licence conditions for released offenders.
