Century-old Cinema in Central Cardiff Set to Make Way for Residential Development

Exciting changes are coming to City Road in Cardiff! The overgrown and unused 100-year-old Gaiety Cinema is set to be transformed into 70 modern flats. After standing vacant for years, this former bingo hall and performance venue will make way for new self-contained apartments and commercial spaces, catering to much-needed affordable housing in the area.

The new development, approved by Cardiff Council, will feature up to seven storeys of stylish flats, including 67 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments. This innovative, car-free site will include cycle storage for 72 bicycles, internal and external resident amenities, and a private landscaped courtyard. Ground-floor commercial units facing City Road will also be part of this exciting project.

While some lament the loss of this historical building, there’s no denying the necessity for regeneration and social housing in the area. Cllr Jon Shimmin acknowledged the need for revitalisation, highlighting the importance of such projects in addressing housing shortages. Cllr Garry Hunt also reflected on the historical significance of the Gaiety, recognising the inevitable progress and transformation of city landscapes.
