The first incident unfolded after Mebrahtu drove a student home. He asked personal questions during the ride, making her uncomfortable. When they reached her place, he requested a hug, but the moment she obliged, he groped her. The student, in shock, managed to escape into her house, only to find him lingering outside before finally driving off. Adding to her distress, he later sent her a friend request on Snapchat.

The second victim encountered Mebrahtu while walking with friends. Targeting her when she appeared separated from her group, he deceived her with an offer of a piggy back, only to assault her once again. Despite her friends’ pursuit, he initially evaded capture but was later caught on CCTV, highlighting his predatory behaviour.

Both victims have spoken out about the lasting impact of these traumatizing experiences. They’ve had to alter their daily routines, dealing with heightened anxiety and difficulty trusting others. The court heard these attacks have significantly disrupted their lives.

During sentencing, the judge emphasised that Mebrahtu abused his position as someone trusted to ensure the safety of young women, pointing out the betrayal involved in his actions. As part of his sentence, he’s not only facing time behind bars but also must adhere to ongoing sex offender registration and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
