Speed limits in Neath Port Talbot are staying put! Despite the Welsh Government’s move in 2023 to lower default speed limits to 20mph, Neath Port Talbot Council has reviewed its roads and decided not to switch any back to 30mph. This decision came after a cabinet meeting where the council discussed the findings of a thorough review process.
The change to 20mph limits, which covers 92% of the area’s roads, hasn’t been without controversy, sparking public outcry and racking up thousands of petition signatures. Yet, two years into the slower pace, supporters claim the change is making roads safer across Wales.
While some councils are flipping certain roads back to 30mph, Neath Port Talbot is not budging. The council’s report highlighted the ongoing need for risk assessments based on community feedback and stated that any future changes would follow guidance set to be published next year. Meanwhile, other councils like Bridgend are re-evaluating and reverting a few roads to 30mph.
