A beachside controversy is brewing over in beautiful North Wales! A shipping container cafe near Trefor Beach has become the centre of a heated debate. Positioned close to the pristine Trefor Sea Stacks and alongside the Wales Coast Path, this café is causing quite the stir in the community.

Cyngor Gwynedd has issued an enforcement notice to remove the café, citing its negative effect on the area’s natural beauty. But owners Ian and Alice Paice are standing their ground, arguing their café supports local tourism and their campsite.

The café, backed by Cyngor Gwynedd’s Spark Fund to boost Welsh-speaking jobs, sits on the old Trefor granite quarry stockyard. Known as Bert’s Kitchen Garden, it provides weary travellers and campers with refreshments, but its shipping container setup has drawn mixed reactions.
While some locals support the café, others, along with the National Trust, are calling for its removal, arguing it disrupts the untouched landscape and causes traffic chaos in Trefor. Local fisherman and residents have voiced concerns over parking issues and access blockages.
The café owners argue it’s part of their broader campsite operation and say they’ve got the means to move it, thanks to its design. They’re challenging Cyngor Gwynedd’s enforcement notice, bringing the case to Planning and Environment Decisions Wales.
