đźŽâś¨ Celebrating a Legend: Richard Burton’s 100th Birthday ✨đźŽ

Exciting news for fans of Richard Burton! On what would have been his 100th birthday, two blue plaques have been unveiled to honour both Richard and the man who believed in him, Philip Burton. Richard’s daughter and granddaughter, Kate and Charlotte Burton, proudly revealed the plaques at Richard’s birthplace and at Philip’s former home on 10th November.

Philip played a crucial role in Richard’s success, adopting him and nurturing his talent, which led to Richard’s stellar career from Shakespearean roles to Hollywood blockbusters like “Cleopatra” and “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold.” Despite his international fame, Richard never forgot his Welsh roots and often returned home, keeping his connection with his heritage alive.

Charlotte Burton expressed, “The plaques are a true honour for my grandfather’s legacy. It’s heartwarming to see his lasting impact on the community that raised him.” Hopefully, these tributes will continue to inspire budding performers for generations.
Philip Burton also shone brightly, contributing significantly to the arts in both Wales and across the pond, helping to found the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.
The celebrations are part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s heritage strategy, recognising two icons who achieved amazing feats without forgetting where they came from.
The festivities don’t stop here! Enjoy a series of centenary events including poetry readings, film screenings, and the grand Richard Burton Centenary Gala at Margam Country Park on 14th November featuring big names like Michael Sheen and Jeff Wayne. And the grand finale? Catch award-winning Matthew Rhys in “Playing Burton” for an exclusive audience. 🌟
