Exciting news for Barry! After being closed since 2023, the old Wilko building on Holton Road has found a new lease of life thanks to the Vale of Glamorgan Council. This once-neglected site is set for a transformation into a vibrant hub for events and community activities, aiming to breathe new life into Barry’s town centre.

In the short term, the council plans to brighten up the space by using the windows for seasonal artwork displays while essential refurbishment work gets underway. The goal is to make this space a lively venue for events by early 2026, drawing more visitors and supporting local businesses.

Cllr Ian Johnson expressed his excitement for the project, highlighting how crucial it is to revitalise such a central spot in Barry. Meanwhile, Cllr Lis Burnett emphasised the importance of bringing shoppers back to the town’s great retailers and creating a buzz around the high street.

With a boost from a £950,000 loan from the Welsh Government, this project is more than just about filling an empty space. It’s about injecting new energy into Barry, supporting its high street, and giving people even more reasons to visit.
Residents are encouraged to share ideas on potential activities for the space, making this a community-driven revival. This venture shows a promising collaboration between local councils and the Welsh Government, aiming to create a thriving and welcoming town centre.
