A massive reform is being proposed that could see soaring council tax bills for some, while many may enjoy much-needed relief. The influential Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) suggests doubling the council tax for those living in luxurious band H homes, valued over £1.5 million. 📈
But it’s not all about hikes! Those in posh band F and G homes could see a 50% increase, but for many living in modest homes, relief is on the cards. The plan is to slash bills for those in the cheaper A to D bands. Nearly £4 billion could be generated, with £1 billion aimed at reducing bills for the majority.
The current system feels like a throwback, with residents in high-end areas like Kensington paying less than those in places like Blackpool, despite owning pricier homes. 🏡
Aditi Sriram, IPPR’s economist, calls the system “unfair and inefficient,” and believes this reform could make it more balanced and fair. Plus, there’s a call to bump up surcharges for foreign buyers from 2% to 6% to ease market speculation. 🌍
