Exciting times ahead for Wrexham! Former Welsh Rugby Union head honcho, David Moffett, has set his sights on a thrilling new venture: a top-notch rugby league team in North Wales. And guess who he’s got in mind for a chat? None other than Hollywood superstar and Wrexham AFC co-owner, Ryan Reynolds!

Moffett, with a wealth of experience from his time in Australia’s NRL, nearly had a consortium ready to roll before hitting pause. Now, with the RFL and NRL in talks about potential collaborations, he believes the time is ripe to reignite those plans.

“I’d like to see Wrexham as home to an elite rugby league team,” Moffett shared. “Imagine the Racecourse Ground buzzing year-round with rugby action!” He’s keen to discuss the idea with Reynolds and co-chairman Rob McElhenney, aiming to use the facility throughout the summer league season.

Wrexham’s no stranger to rugby league, having hosted the Crusaders RL back in the day. According to Moffett, fan interest is booming across North Wales and in Northern England’s Welsh communities, providing the perfect foundation for a sustainable team.
Critically, Moffett suggests that any new team needs the blessing of the RFL, pushing for greater alignment with the NRL to ensure success. He emphasised, “The sport needs bold decisions. They’ve got to involve the NRL.”
Though recently linked with the Scarlets through a US-based investment adventure, Moffett’s focus seems firmly set on giving the rugby league world a new Welsh star! It’s an ambitious vision that could reshape the sporting landscape in the region. Would you love to see rugby league thrive in Wrexham? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! 🏉✨
