🏉✨ Who’s the greatest Welsh rugby player of all time? According to rugby legend Sam Warburton, the answer is clear: Sir Gareth Edwards! 🇯🇲

In a recent chat, Warburton had zero hesitation in naming the iconic scrum-half as the best to have ever worn the Welsh jersey. Edwards, a former captain who took on the role at just 20, left an indelible mark on rugby with an incredible career that didn’t miss a single match for Wales from 1967 to 1978. That’s 53 caps of pure brilliance, including seven Five Nations titles and three Grand Slams!

The Welsh wonder was also a crucial part of the Lions’ victorious 1971 tour of New Zealand and their undefeated 1974 tour of South Africa. And who could forget THAT try for the Barbarians against the All Blacks in 1973? 🏃♂️💨 Even now, it’s still celebrated as one of the most epic in rugby history.
Warburton, a rugby great in his own right, has always praised Edwards. For him, the name Gareth Edwards is synonymous with Welsh rugby. Back in 2024, when asked to name his top five Welsh players, Warburton didn’t hesitate to put Edwards at the top of the list, alongside legends like Phil Bennett, Barry John, Alun Wyn Jones, and Shane Williams.
It’s clear there’s mutual respect between these two giants of the game. Edwards once paid tribute to Warburton’s outstanding career, calling him a fantastic ambassador and captain. Now that’s what we call mutual admiration in the rugby world! 🤝🙌
