💔 Heartbroken Mother Fights for Change After Tragic Death of Daughter
Joanna Patton’s world was shattered when her “lovely, beautiful, and bubbly” 16-year-old daughter, Kianna, was found dead in the abandoned Commodore Hotel in Pembroke Dock back in 2019. Now, Joanne’s on a mission to ensure no other family endures such pain.
An inquest recently ruled that Kianna, who faced mental health challenges and dabbled in cannabis, didn’t have the “necessary intent for a conclusion of suicide.” Joanne refuses to accept her daughter’s death as suicide, believing Kianna’s struggles were compounded by mental health issues.
In memory of her daughter, Joanne plans to campaign for ‘Kianna’s Law,’ changing the legal age to leave home in the UK from 16 to 18. “At 16, you’re not ready to make life-altering decisions,” she insists, drawing inspiration from countries where such parental consent is required.
Reflecting on Kianna’s life, Joanne shared fond memories of a musically gifted girl who cherished animals and family holidays. To honour her, they light candles and have dedicated a rose bush and lantern. On special occasions, Joanne performs random acts of kindness, keeping Kianna’s love alive.
Kianna’s case highlights the urgent need for better mental health support. Coroner Gareth Lewis pointed out deficiencies in Kianna’s care, indicating that a more robust safety plan might have prevented her death.
The health board has acknowledged past shortcomings and is committed to improvements, including 24/7 mental health crisis services.
