The council has introduced “seagull sacks” to combat the chaos. Every home that used to rely on black bags will now receive these sturdy 70-litre sacks. They’re designed to fend off nosy gulls and other critters, holding as much waste as a typical 140-litre wheeled bin. And for those already using wheeled bins — no change for you, as you’re already in the clear!

Earlier this year, Adamsdown residents tested these miracle sacks and the results are promising. Litter reports dropped by 16% and there was a whopping 36% reduction in waste left out for collection. Plus, more waste enforcement notices were issued, ensuring that our streets stay free of mess.

The rollout kicked off on 17 November, with 14 wards already starting their new collections. Areas like Cyncoed, Gabalfa, and Llandaff are among the first to benefit. Meanwhile, Cathays residents will join the initiative on 3 December. If you’re in Butetown, Caerau, or any of the other specified areas, mark 24 November on your calendars for a cleaner start!

Councillor Norma Mackie shares, “Birds and pests ripping open black bags have been a big problem, but these new sacks will make a significant difference.” Cleaner streets mean happier communities, and we’re all for it.
