🚗💸 Big News for EV Drivers! 🎙️

Electric vehicle owners, brace yourselves! The government is eyeing new pay-per-mile charges for EV drivers. This was hinted at by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander on BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. With the growing shift towards electric cars, this potential charge aims to balance the scales since EV drivers currently don’t pay fuel duty like their petrol and diesel counterparts.

As fuel duty revenue from traditional cars dwindles, there’s increasing chatter about a fairer tax system for all motorists, and this pay-per-mile scheme could be part of it. However, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves expected to unveil more details in the upcoming Budget, nothing’s set in stone just yet. On a brighter note, there’s also talk of a hefty £1.3 billion grant to slash the upfront cost of EVs, possibly cutting prices by up to £3,750!

But not everything is smooth on the road ahead. Concerns have been raised about potential charges for mileage racked up abroad, stirring debate among motoring experts. While the Treasury hasn’t shared much about their final plans, they’re emphasising the need for a fair system that maintains our ageing roads and infrastructure without derailing the EV transition.
