A shocking incident in Swansea has led to the dismissal of a police sergeant. Richard Jones, a sergeant with South Wales Police, was sacked without notice after placing his hands around a woman’s throat and making a vile sexual remark during a night out on St Patrick’s Day. Despite his denial, a misconduct hearing confirmed these actions were not only grossly inappropriate but also sexually motivated, resulting in significant psychological stress for the victim.

Jones was off duty and drinking with colleagues in Swansea, having consumed alcohol throughout the day, before the incident took place on Wind Street. During this outing, he had a conversation with a woman, referred to as Ms A, and later approached her, leading to the appalling behaviour that was uninvited and unwanted.
The misconduct panel highlighted the severe nature of Jones’ actions, concluding they represented an abuse of his position of trust and authority. This behaviour not only caused harm to Ms A, necessitating her to seek counselling, but also posed a risk to public trust in policing.

The panel found the claims to be true, marking the action as gross misconduct, and dismissed Jones immediately. The incident also highlighted the impact of alcohol on his shocking behaviour. The decision ensures that his name will be added to a policing barred list, preventing him from serving in any police capacity again.
This case underscores the importance of maintaining trust and integrity within the police force and sends a strong message about the consequences of abusing power. Let’s hope for healing and justice for the victim and continued accountability within law enforcement.
