Centre manager Rachel shares the reality: demand is rising, yet resources are thinning. With 14 schools, a hospital, and a domestic violence refuge relying on their support, the call for toys this year is louder than ever. Canolfan Pentre plays Santa to children who might otherwise wake up to an empty stocking on Christmas morning.
The numbers are staggering, with requests from just three primary schools already hitting 90. This is no surprise, considering Rhondda Cynon Taf is one of the most deprived areas in Wales, with a significant portion of the population living in poverty.
But it’s not just about toys. The centre also hosts a top-up shop with essential items at prices that make it affordable for everyone. This shop, which keeps people afloat, is in dire need of more support and usage. As Rachel puts it, “I wish it was busier. People could save so much by shopping here.”
Every corner of Canolfan Pentre buzzes with activity – toddlers taking their first steps, mums and dads finding companionship, and kids knowing they can get a hot meal. Classes and clubs are a constant, from baby groups to chair yoga. It’s all about a community coming together, learning from each other, and sometimes just having someone who’ll listen.
