We’re saddened by the loss of former Wales captain, Mike ‘Spikey’ Watkins, who passed away at 73 in Bangkok. An unforgettable presence on the rugby field, Mike didn’t make his international debut until the age of 32, but made an immediate impact by captaining Wales in all four of his matches in 1984.

Starting his rugby journey in Newport, Watkins later played 118 games for Cardiff before joining Newport RFC, making 229 appearances. Against the odds, he led Wales to victories over Ireland and England, becoming a cherished favourite among fans and teammates alike. Known for his leadership, Mike had a unique personality—always full of spirit and charisma.
After retiring from playing, he shared his expertise by coaching teams like Pontypridd and Newbridge, and eventually settled in Thailand. Tributes have poured in, including heartfelt comments from Phil Steele, who remembered him as the “best captain I ever played under.”

Mike was not just a fierce competitor but a true sports icon who will be greatly missed. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him and followed his remarkable career. Rest in peace, Spikey. 💔
