A grandad’s journey back home is about to begin, and it’s nothing short of a road trip marathon! Brian Ackroyd, 65, from Leyland, Lancashire, suffered a serious fall during a holiday in Croatia, leaving him with a fractured skull, broken vertebra, nerve damage, and three brain bleeds. Stranded in a Dubrovnik hospital for a month, his family had to rally together to find a way to bring him back to the UK for further treatment.

Despite having travel insurance, Brian was left in a tough spot after an insurance mishap, as crucial medical details were not disclosed. Although the insurer, Admiral, extended a goodwill payment, the cost of a medical flight was steep – £35,000 to £40,000. His determined family launched a fundraising drive, and with a combination of donations and the insurer’s contribution, they raised nearly £14,000. It was enough to secure a land ambulance for the 30-hour trip back to the UK.

Accompanied by specialist nurses, Brian will travel through several countries, passing under the Channel Tunnel, with the destination being Preston for intensive rehab. His partner, Debbie Wright, has been by his side in Croatia and shared the heart-wrenching moment he fell, hitting his head and becoming trapped. Since then, local Croatian families and hospital staff have shown immense kindness and support.
Though the road ahead is still challenging, with Brian needing a lot of rehabilitation, the love and dedication his family has shown have been powerful. Debbie expressed her gratitude to the staff and locals in Croatia, saying their compassion has been unforgettable.
Here’s to a safe journey home, Brian, and to the new beginning awaiting you in the UK! We’re cheering you on every mile of the way! 🏥💪💖
