A tragic loss has left a family heartbroken as Cardiff University student Lucy Atkins and her beloved dog Simba were killed in a car crash last year. Lucy, who had just completed her first year studying business management, was walking her dog in Quinton, Birmingham, when they were struck by a car driven by Danielle Mitten, who had been speeding at 63mph in a 40mph zone.

Mitten, aged 34, admitted to causing death by dangerous driving and has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison. In addition, she faces a driving ban for seven years and eight months and must pass an extended test to drive again.

Lucy’s family has lovingly described her as a “force of nature,” reflecting on the joy, kindness, and care she brought to everyone she met. Although deeply pained by the loss, they hope sharing their story will raise awareness about the consequences of dangerous driving, preventing further tragedies.
Lucy’s brother voiced a poignant message, expressing his desire for healing and urging others, including Mitten, to live life in Lucy’s honour rather than in grief. He believes this is what Lucy would have wanted.
This heartbreaking event serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of careless driving. Let’s honour Lucy’s memory by driving responsibly and making safer choices on the road. Rest in peace, Lucy and Simba. 🕊️💔
