In a heart-stopping incident caught on “Crash Detectives,” two passengers suffered severe injuries when they were thrown from a Volkswagen Polo during a high-speed crash in Newport. The driver, Jamie Challis, was travelling at a reckless 70mph in a 30mph zone before colliding with a Citroen C3.

Witnesses report seeing the Polo clip a lamppost, flinging two unbelted passengers onto the road. Amidst this chaos, Challis abandoned the scene, leaving behind a critically injured 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman. While the man eventually recovered, the woman is facing life-changing injuries.

PC Matt Rue speculated, based on crash damage, that the car pivoted at high speed, ejecting passengers due to their lack of seatbelts. Forensic investigator Sergeant Cath Raine confirmed the driver fled, leaving his passengers in dire straits.

Crucial evidence, including CCTV footage, helped trace Challis’ escape route. Witnesses saw him flee towards Ringland, where a black Audi picked him up. Further investigation revealed a trail leading to a local pub, which helped identify Challis through distinctive tattoos and a chunky bracelet.

Despite initially denying driving, DNA evidence from airbags placed him in the driver’s seat. Further matching DNA linked him to an earlier aggravated burglary, sealing his fate.

Challis confessed to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, amongst other charges, and received nearly 20 years in prison.

This shocking event underscores the critical importance of road safety. Our thoughts are with the victims, and we hope for justice and recovery for those affected. 🚓⚖️
